Rockland Honors 2 Women Vets With Freedom Awards In 2024

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Every March, Rockland County presents the Freedom Award to outstanding female veterans for their outstanding service to our nation.

On Wednesday, County Executive Ed Day and Director Susan Branam of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency recognized two female veterans with a Freedom Award.

“Acknowledging those who have worked and sacrificed to protect the freedoms we enjoy is crucial,” said Day. “Particularly women whose contributions to building and protecting our country have long been overlooked.”

The 2024 Freedom Award was presented to Major Mattie Moore, US Army Reserve (Ret.). Mattie served in Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm in 1991. She has been a Registered Nurse since 1971 and has worked at numerous hospitals.

As a member of the US Army Reserves, she worked for 30 years at Keller Army Community Hospital in West Point. She is dedicated to her country and to her community. Mattie has also volunteered with many organizations in Rockland County including the United Negro College Fund, Healing the Children, and the American Legion Hunger Program. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Buffalo Soldiers of Rockland County.

The County also recognized the late Mary Contreras, a Vietnam Veteran who served as a nurse in the US Army. Mary touched many lives during her service and throughout her life. She was proud of her military service and is remembered by those who knew her for her strong work ethic and dedication to her family and her community. Her award was accepted by Dr. Jose Contreras.

“There’s no question, the freedoms we enjoy today would not be possible without women like these who made the brave choice to serve, and it is my pleasure to recognize their service,” said Veterans Service Agency Director Susan Branam.

“We thank Major Moore and Mary Contreras for their bravery and continued commitment to our residents. We are proud to list your names among the women recipients of the Rockland County Freedom Award in years past,” Day said.
