Rocklanders Encouraged To Join Cancer Prevention Study
Male and female residents between 30 and 65 years old are sought for study

Â
Rockland County Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell and the American Cancer Society (ACS) are urging residents, ages 30 to 65 who have never had cancer, to volunteer to participate in the ACS’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). ACS designated Rockland as a prime enrollment location for the study.
The goal of CPS-3 is to identify causes of cancer and to further research into new, effective cancer prevention strategies. ACS wants to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial and ethnic backgrounds from across the country. Â

“I have partnered with ACS in the past on breast health outreach, detection and treatment, all successful campaigns to promote the importance of early detection,” said Cornell. “We have the opportunity to help in this major new project to find ways to prevent cancer.  I will be asking residents who meet the criteria to step forward to volunteer.”
Blue Hill Plaza, Good Samaritan and Nyack Hospital are hosting the local enrollment efforts and details on enrollment and participation will be announced on Wednesday at a press conference in New City. More information about enrollment can be found here.Â
This is ACS’ third national study.  The original study, conducted in the 1950s, was the first to confirm the link between tobacco use and cancer.  Highlights of the second study, conducted in the 1980s, revealed the link between obesity and cancer, and also concluded that increased aspirin use could decrease the risk for colon cancer.
