Clarkstown elementary and middle school students were recognized at Monday’s school board meeting for their Math Olympiad and WordMasters competition successes.
Student Maris Daly placed in the top two percent nationwide in the Math Olympiad and 12 local students ranked in the top 10 percent nationally. A total of 13 district teams competed in the Math Olympiad. The highest scorer from each Clarkstown team was recognized and received a trophy. The Math Olympiad, which consists of five different areas of competition, was created in 1977. Nearly 150,000 students worldwide participate in it yearly.
Sixth grader Mary O’Connell received a perfect score in all her WordMasters challenges. She was the only sixth grader in the United States with that achievement. About 250,000 students participate in WordMasters. The Clarkstown students with the highest scores received ribbons with medals.

Clarkstown Community Learning Center Director Marion Arbuco said students form Bardonia, West Nyack, Strawtown, Woodglen, Congers, Lakewood, Link, Little Tor, Laurel Plains, and New City elementary schools and Felix Festa Middle School participated in the two programs.
