Water Service Shut-off On Wednesday
600 homes in area of Buena Vista Road will not have water service for four hours while section of water main replaced
New City and Ramapo residents in the area of Buena Vista Road will lose water service for at least four hours Wednesday while a section of water main is replaced. The impacted neighborhood covers homes north of New Hempstead Road on Buena Vista Road and those bounded by Buena Vista Road, the Palisades Interstate Parkway and Route 202. The service interruption is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The water main replacement is part of the New Hempstead Road reconstruction project. As part of the work, United Water is relocating a water main on Buena Vista Road at the intersection of New Hempstead Road.

“It’s a water main that runs up Buena Vista Road,” Rockland County Deputy Highway Superintendent Andy Connors said. “It’s what called a dead end water main.”
Often water mains connect or loop with other lines but this one does not and that requires the service shut off. Connors said the section of water main affected is about 10 to 12 feet long and the work will take place even if it rains.

“It shouldn’t be two, three hours at the most,” he said. “The piece of pipe we have to put in is already made up.”
Connors said workers will begin digging at 7 a.m. and replacement of the water main will start at 9 a.m. The water will be turned off; the main will be cut and the new section of pipe attached and water turned back on. He explained the section of pipe must be replaced so the water main will be raised above a storm drainage pipe.
The county notified customers using the NY Alert system on Monday night and will contact them again at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. today. With the work occurring during the day, Connors hopes most people will be at work or school and the number affected will be minimal. Customers have been advised to fill containers so they have water during that time. They can contact United Water at 845-623-1500.
