How To Recycle Your Christmas Tree In North Hempstead

NEW HYDE PARK, NY —Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree — how do we safely dispose of thee?

It's a question many of us have. Luckily, getting rid of your evergreen is a fairly simple process. Here's how it works for the Town of North Hempstead:

Curbside Pickup

For the first two weeks of January, you can leave live Christmas trees curbside on normal yard waste collection days. Collection schedules can be found here.

Before you drop it off, remember to remove all of the tree's decorations, lights, ornaments, tinsel, and stands. Any plastic bags or plastic wrapping should be placed in your trash receptacle.

Residential Drop-Off Program

You can also take advantage of the Town's Residential Residential Drop-Off Program. The Town's Transfer Station is located at 999 West Shore Rd. in Port Washington. Fees apply.

A Reminder About Fire Safety

The National Fire Protection Association recommends taking your tree outside after Christmas or when the tree dries out. Dried-out trees pose a fire hazard and should not be left inside your home or garage. Bringing it outside and leaning it against your home is also a no-go.
