Maternal Mortality, And Black Women's Higher Risk, Focus At Northwell

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — The U.S. has a higher maternal mortality rate than any other industrialized country, and for Black mothers, the mortality rate is three times higher than for white mothers, according to Northwell Health. The health system is trying to combat these statistics by appointing a new director at New Hyde Park's Center for Maternal Health, at Katz Institute for Women's Health, who has been a leader in the issue.

This week Northwell announced that Dawnette Lewis, MD, MPH, will oversee the health system's maternal health program.

Lewis is a maternal-fetal specialist, and the top doctor in the New York State Birth Equity Improvement Project, a state effort to help hospitals establish safe and equitable care for pregnant, birthing and postpartum women.

“The risks Black women face during and after pregnancy and childbirth are a shameful illustration of the disparities that continue to diminish the well-being of our nation,” Michael Dowling, Northwell Health’s president said.

“Dr. Lewis has long been a leader in the effort to eliminate the inequities that produce these deplorable risks. We are confident that she will lead the Center to success as we provide the resources and do the work to ensure that Black women and their babies get the care and attention they need to not just survive but thrive.”

Northwell opened the Center for Maternal Health in April 2022, to reduce negative maternal outcomes from conception through the first year after birth. Programs are aimed at high-risk women, educating health care providers, and community support for new mothers.

“Supporting birthing people before, during and after pregnancy is one of the highest responsibilities a society has," Lewis said.
