'Heartbroken': More Than $20K Raised For Family Of 15-Year-Old Killed In E-Bike Crash On LI
Antonio Benitez died in an e-bike crash Saturday night on LI, after a reported police pursuit from Queens, authorities say.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — A GoFundMe page has been created to support the family of Antonio Benitez, a 15-year-old from Long Island who died over the weekend during a reported police pursuit from Queens, authorities said.
More than $21,000 has been donated since the GoFundMe was launched by Lori Hudson. Benitez, who was also known as Anthony, was to start his sophomore year at New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
Principal Rosemary DeGennaro said the school and the Sewanhaka Central School District is "deeply saddened" by Benitez's death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cabrera family as they deal with this terrible tragedy," DeGennaro said.
The fatal electric bike crash took place on Saturday night in North New Hyde Park, police said. According to the New York Police Department, on Saturday at about 8:01 p.m., police responded to a 911 call about a knife-point robbery in progress in front of 256-17 Hillside avenue, in the 105th Precinct.

"Anthony was passionate about lacrosse, football, and biking with his friends. Known for his kindness, humor and deep love for his family and friends, he touched many lives," the GoFundMe page said.
"The community is heartbroken, and efforts are being made to raise money to support his family during this difficult time," the GoFundMe said.
Officers pursued Benitez, who was riding an electric bicycle, police said.
While officers pursued Benitez, he was struck by a Lexus GX 460, at the intersection of Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue in New Hyde Park, Nassau County police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Lexus, Ruyan Ali, 28, of North New Hyde Park, was arrested near the scene without further incident, police said.
He was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with a fatality; second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation; third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation; and multiple other traffic violations, police said.
