New Hyde Park Student Wins $25K In Prestigious Science Competition

Sandeep Sawhney, a senior at Herricks High School,​​ won $25,000 from the Regeneron Science Talent Search.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — A high school student from New Hyde Park is a top 40 finalist in the 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition.

As a finalist, Sandeep Sawhney, a senior at Herricks High School, won $25,000.

He is also a top 10 finalist in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LSS) Long Island region Student Visionaries of the Year campaign.

Sawhney's research involved using gallium ions to treat cancer. The 18-year-old developed a DNA container to deliver toxic cancer therapies for his Regeneron Science Talent Search bioengineering project.

Student Visionaries of the Year is a seven-week philanthropic leadership development program during which students foster professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management to raise funds for LLS.
