NJ Man Accused Of Scamming Woman Out Of $20K, Seeking More: Police
He is accused of pretending to be a Walmart employee calling about a compromised account, Nassau County police said.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — A New Jersey man faces charges in Nassau County over accusations that he scammed an elderly woman out of $20,000 and tried to steal more, police said.
According to detectives, a 69-year-old New Hyde Park resident received a phone call Sept. 6
from a stranger claiming to be a Walmart employee. The man told the woman that there was fraudulent activity on her account and that her social security number was compromised. She was instructed to move her money out of her bank account to protect it.
She withdrew $20,000 Sept. 9 and met with a stranger in the parking lot of City Park Plaza on Jericho Turnpike and gave him the money to safeguard.

She later realized she was being scammed and contacted police.
On Friday, he contacted her again and requested additional funds. Detectives then coordinated with her and arrested Tejas Kapur, 51, of 64 Edgar Street, Carteret, in the same parking lot.

Kapur is charged with grand larceny and attempted grand larceny. He was due to be arraigned on Saturday at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
The Nassau County Police Department urges the community to be on alert and to remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams or fraud.
