NEW HYDE PARK, NY — Jewish people in New Hyde Park will celebrate Sukkot from sunset Monday, Sept. 20, until nightfall Monday, Sept. 27.

According to biblical tradition, the high holiday celebrates the fall festival and commemorates the years that the Jewish people, led by Moses, spent trekking through the desert after leaving Egypt in Exodus. In those 40 years, they lived in temporary huts or booths called a "sukkah" (the plural is "sukkot," which is the name of this holiday).

Today, Jews celebrate Sukkot by building a sukkah. They typically eat inside the sukkah during the holiday — but some even sleep in it. The goal is to spend as much time as possible there.
