Thoroughbred Trainer From LI Found Dead On Greek Island: Report

Toby Sheets was the longtime assistant trainer for Hall of Famer trainer Steve Asmussen.

FLORAL PARK, NY — A longtime member of the thoroughbred racing community has died during a trip to Greece, Newsday reported.

Toby Sheets, of Floral Park, was the assistant trainer to Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, the Thoroughbred Racing News said.

Sheets, who was 55 years old, was found Sunday on a beach on the Greek island of Mathraki.

He died from drowning, the coroner told ABC News. He was last seen alive on June 11, ABC reported.

The U.S. Embassy in Greece was working toward transferring Sheets' body back to the U.S.

Sheets' death is the latest in a series of foreign tourists disappearing or found dead on the Greek islands in the past week, the Associated Press reported.

Some of the deaths are being linked to a record heat wave as hikers got lost in a remote area of the island, Newsday said.
