LONG ISLAND, NY — Election Day is Tuesday, and voters will choose between incumbent Republican incumbent Anthony Palumbo and Skyler Johnson, a Democrat, in the race for the New York State Senate District 1 seat.
Senate District 1 covers the East End towns of East Hampton, Southold, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Riveerhead as well as some of eastern Brookhaven Town.
In anticipation of the election, Patch asked candidates in the contested races to answer questions about their campaigns. Here are their answers, lightly edited for clarity.

Before winning my election for New York State Senate, I served in the New York State Assembly for 7 years and was a former Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney.
Why are you seeking this office?
I am running for re-election to make Long Island safer and more affordable and to enact policies that will help to protect the environment and our unique quality of life.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
The major difference between me and my opponent is experience, and my ability and willingness to work with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to deliver for the men and women of the 1st Senate District.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
Crime and protecting the environment and our drinking water.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I have secured record funding for our schools, suspended state tax on gasoline, restored STAR relief checks, and passed a middle class tax cut. In my one term as senator, I had 37 prime sponsored bills pass, including legislation to create an affordable housing fund for the East End and to allow for the use of CPF funding for water quality projects.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Work hard and stay humble.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
I played college baseball and was in a band. As a senator, my job is to advocate for common sense solutions to the myriad of issues impacting the state and oppose radical policies that will erode our public safety and make the state unaffordable.
