Motorcyclist Killed in Route 48 Crash

According to Southold Police, a Shirley man was killed Wednesday night while driving on Route 48, as a car driver attempted to make a left turn onto the road.

A Shirley man was killed Wednesday night, according to after he collided with a Mercedes Benz while driving his motorcycle on Route 48.

Police said Martin Pastore Jr., 62, was driving his Harley Davidson eastbound on Route 48 when Steven Molkentin, of Manorville, attempted to make a left turn onto the busy four-lane road coming off of Depot Lane in Cutchogue.

According to police, the two collided around 6:20 p.m., and responded to the scene to treat Pastore, who was later airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center by Suffolk County Police Aviation. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

Molkentin was treated by Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad and transported to in Riverhead.

Police impounded both vehicles and the invedtigation is ongoing.
