New Spanish-Style Restaurant Proposed for Mattituck

Vacant front building in complex across from Love Lane has interest from a Guatemalan restaurateur.

but another restaurant focusing on South American cuisine might be on the horizon for Mattituck.

A new site plan application for La Gran Villa Restaurant is currently before the Southold Town Planning Board. Robert Barrett, agent for applicant Marina Recinos, told planning board members Monday night that the business will be a sit-down, Spanish-style restaurant in a vacant front building of the Crystal Clear Cleaning Corporation complex at 13000 Route 25 across from Love Lane.

“It’s single-service — you order what you want at a counter and it will be brought out to you on a plate,” he said. “There will be to-go bags but not take-out as such.”

The site plan is for a proposed modification of an existing 3,138 square-foot building to a 16-seat, single-service restaurant in the Hamlet Business Zoning District in Mattituck. There are 22 existing parking spaces in a lot to the east of the site and no more are proposed.

Provisional planner Brian Cummings said that the space has at one point been a church and an auction hall, but he was unsure of how long it has currently been vacant. The last site plan proposal came through in 1993 for a sign company.

To Barrett, this proposal is a good one.

“We’re very anxious to see this discussed,” he said. “This has been a very difficult site over the years with very small peaks of activity. I think a Spanish-style restaurant with modest prices would be an asset to Mattituck.

The planning board accepted the application for review.
