Report: NY Lags in Beach Water Quality; Suffolk Above Average
A study measuring 30 states' beach water standards found 8 percent of beaches out of compliance. New York State checked in at 10 percent while Suffolk measured 7 percent.
A report released Wednesday by the National Resources Defense Council, a nationwide environmental advocacy group, found that beach water quality levels in New York State ranked 24th out of 30 states tested, concluding that 10 percent of the state's beach water samples exceeded national health standards in 2011.
New York ranked 19th in last year's study, 23rd in a study released in 2010, and 21st the year prior.
The study measured nearly 200 beaches in Suffolk County, which was found to have 7 percent of its beaches in excess of national standards. Niagra County reportedly led the state with 31 percent out of compliance.
