Thunderstorms, Rain Expected Wednesday Night Into Thursday: NWS

LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Islanders are expected to see thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain Wednesday night into Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

James Tomasini, meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, said, Wednesday morning is expected to remain dry, with cloud cover slowly dissipating though the afternoon; the exception is on the South Shore, where clouds may remain for a longer period of time.

Around midnight, showers and thunderstorms are slated to begin across Long Island, with precipitation increasing through the night, and about an 80 percent chance of rain Thursday morning.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day Thursday, with local heavy rainfall possible. In total, about an inch of rain is expected overall, with local amounts possibly higher during thunderstorms, Tomasini said.

A southerly wind of about 10 miles per hour is expected Wednesday, increasing to about 10 to 15 miles per hour Thursday, with some gusts of up to 20 miles per hour, he said.

Rain is expected to taper off Thursday, with a dry Friday in the forecast, Tomasini added.
