High levels of bacteria were found at both beaches, according to the county.

NORTHPORT, NY — Two Northport beaches were closed to swimming, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott announced Tuesday.

Steers Beach and Asharoken Beach are closed to swimming, as a high level of bacteria was found in the waters of both beaches, according to the county.

Pigott said bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
