3 Men Rescued From Overturned Canoe In Long Island Sound

The three men were seen hanging onto their canoe that had overturned about 300 yards off shore on Friday afternoon, police say.

Three men were rescued from a canoe that overturned in the Long Island Sound on Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, an employee of the power plant in Northport notified the Suffolk County Marine Bureau after he saw three men hanging onto their canoe that had overturned about 300 yards off shore at 2:50 p.m.

The officers arrived to the scene about three minutes later and rescued the men. They were identified as Javier Villatoro, 27, of Brentwood, his brother Jose Villatoro, 25, of Central Islip and Odir Vilorio, 30, of Huntington Station. Villatoro was the only person wearing a life jacket, police say.

The men and their canoe were taken to the Soundview boat ramp in Northport. They refused medical attention.
