3 Northport Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

Semifinalists qualified by ranking among the top 1 percent nationally on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

During the second week of September, Northport High School seniors Madeleine Kestler-DeWan, Katie Sierra and Nathaniel Wang were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program.

To qualify for this program, students must first take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test along with 1.6 million other students each year. After taking the test in October, students Madeleine, Katie and Nathaniel scored among the top 16,000 students nationwide, also placing them within the highest-scoring in the state. Semifinalists will now compete for the final 7,500 National Merit Scholarships by continuing their journey towards academic excellence, and by scoring well on the SAT.
