Task Force Finds Additional Parking on Main Street

Northport Police Chief gives thumbs up for six additional spaces.

Six additional parking spaces were sussed out by members of the Northport Parking Task Force during a walk-through of Main Street with Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal Tuesday.

Possible locations for additional parking spots are:

  • A compact space in front of Honey Bees Bakery
  • A compact space in front of Moy Cleaners
  • A compact space in front of Four Star Variety
  • A compact space in front of Dorothy Walsh Parking Lot
  • A full space in front of Northport Hardware
  • A full space in front of Suffolk Physical Therapy

All potential spaces would need to be vetted and approved by the Village Board. Existing lines would need to be sandblasted and repainted, new signage created, and new meters installed at each space. Creating the new spaces would not require additional construction.

The Northport Parking Task Force is a joint initiative between the Northport Chamber of Commerce and the village formed in October to identify short and long term solutions to Northport's persistent parking problems.

Chamber Secretary Dorothy Walsh, First VP Ron Iannacone, and Member Adolfo Biagioni performed the walk-through with Chief Bruckenthal Tuesday. Adolfo Biagioni measured each space according to State parking space dimension recommendations for compact and full-sized vehicles. They also discussed ingress and egress concerns as well as "phantom driveways" that are no longer in use.

If approved by the Board, they hope to complete the project by early 2013.
