NORTHPORT, NY — Granite and Quartz, 8-month-old siblings, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Kittens of the Week.

These two siblings were found alone in a masonry yard in Hempstead, according to Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue.

"Can you imagine being a baby kitten in a mason yard, with huge machines, loud noises, and tons of workers all around you?" Wild said. "Then at night when the machines are turned off and the workers leave, the nighttime predators start to come out. Granite and Quartz were each other’s only comfort. Somehow, they made it. How could we have turned our back on these two?"

The rescue was patient and gave the two kittens time to heal, even though when they went to the rescue, they were the "most fiery and sassy pair." They were fierce because of having to survive on their own, Wild said.

"They trusted no one except each other."

In foster care, they came to feel comfortable with their foster family, according to Wild. They loved to cuddle and play with the other cats in their foster home. They would even jump in a wet bathtub and play. They love to run around with their toy springs in their mouth.

"When Granite wants his dinner, he will ask for it with the cutest meow," Wild said. "Once comfortable, Quartz will purr while being pet."

Granite has fur like a Russian Blue, Wild said. Quartz has a cute freckle next to her nose and the saddest eyes, Wild said.

"They are very bonded. So, they should be easy to get adopted right?" Wild said. "Well, it would be, if the most perfect and patient person walked into Petco Huntington where they are currently at and said the following: 'Hey guys, I am gonna give you a chance. I will be patiently waiting for you both to relax. Then we will play together, cuddle together, watch TV together and take naps together. I will be here. I won’t give up. I will keep you safe. All you must do is learn to trust me, and with time, I know you will.' That is who Granite and Quartz are waiting for and need. Are you out there? If you are, please come on down to Petco Huntington and see this beautiful pair."

For cats, growing up in habitats is tough, Wild said.

"Someday, we know this will all be just a faint memory for them. All they need is a chance."

They are neutered or spayed, have all their shots, are litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
