Good Samaritans Help Return Lost Presents In Northport

When presents fell out of a moving vehicle on Christmas night, several cars passed by before one generously pulled over to help.

Presents that fell out of a moving vehicle in Northport on Christmas night were rightfully returned to the owner thanks to a few good Samaritans.

Northport Police say an SUV was traveling south on Woodbine Avenue, near Main Street, when its hatchback opened, causing several presents to tumble out into the street at 11:10 p.m. The driver of the vehicle was unaware of what happened and did not stop, police say.

After several cars passed by the packages, a vehicle pulled over and three occupants got out of the car and retrieved the gifts from the street. The entire ordeal was captured by the Northport Police Department’s video surveillance system.

The finders, who wished to remain anonymous, then made a Facebook post about the found gifts to help locate the owner. (see below)

The owner of the gifts, a nephew of a Woodbine Avenue resident, reported the loss of the packages to Northport Police soon after. Police informed him they had his packages, and he picked them up later Wednesday morning.

“It’s apparent that these [good Samaritans] were elves, who were on their way back to the North Pole, when they stopped to spread just a little more Christmas cheer for total strangers," Northport Police Chief Bill Ricca said.
