Eric Panten, owner of Unique Homes tells Patch about his 38 years of experience in the contracting industry and shares the three easiest improvements that will increase the value of readers’ homes.

Eric: My name is Eric Panten and I have been the owner of Unique Homes for 38 years.

Eric: I have the knowledge and ability to repair or replace anything in a home.

Patch: What are some of the most common issues or problems you see in homes?

Eric: Everything in a home has a life expectancy. Most homes on Long Island are 50 years or older. It's cheaper to maintain a home than let repairs build up.

Patch: What are the three easiest improvements homeowners can make that will increase the value of their properties?

Eric: Updating modeling and trims, changing interior doors and adding crown modeling.

Patch: How did you get into the contracting business?

Eric: As the oldest of four boys my mother depended on me to fix, repair or replace things in her homes. At the age of 16, I started by building decks and extensions. I found it very satisfying; I taught myself everything by doing.

Patch: What has been the toughest project during your career or what project are you most proud of?

Eric: I bought my own home in 1992 and over the past 25 years I have designed, renovated, and refurbished every surface.

Patch: What is your favorite part about your job?

Eric: Creating with a passion and ultimately satisfying the customer with a impeccable finished project.

Patch: When should a homeowner call in a professional as opposed to trying to fix the problem by himself or herself?

Eric: Anytime safety is an issue; but also in the event that further damage may be a result. Don’t be pound wise and penny foolish.

Patch: What is the best business advice you have ever received?

Eric: “Success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and whatever job I am on I create with passion.”
