Update: John Pappias Receives Prison Sentence

John Pappias, the Northport man who pleaded guilty to a felony hit and run charge in October, was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in prison Wednesday morning, according to Newsday.

Pappias was arrested on Jan. 14 after police linked his Chevy Tahoe pickup truck to debris at the scene of a Oct. 28, 2011 hit and run on Fort Salonga Road that killed construction worker Victor Schultz of Massapequa Park.

Schultz' brother wrote about the pain and despair the family has endured since the fatal hit and run that took the life of Victor Schultz.

“The sheer emptiness and grief of a family holiday…no family gatherings, no Thanksgiving, no Christmas cheer, no ringing in the New Year," he said. "Just an empty seat at the dining room table where Vic once sat.”

It was not the first time Pappias had struck a pedestrian. In 2010, a 15-year-old boy was critically injured in Bay Shore after he darted out on his bicycle in front of Pappias' 2008 Honda, though no criminal charges were filed.

Pappias also received a six month concurrent sentence for his guilty plea to a misdemeanor DWI charge for which he was arrested while out on bail for the hit and run. During the incident in Aug., Pappias was found passed out at the wheel of a running car in Northport.
