Tsakos was struck and killed by a woman accused of driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway on April 27, 2021. He was directing traffic after a previous crash when he was hit by Jessica Beauvais, 32, of Hempstead. She attempted to flee the scene of the accident and has since been denied bail.

Thousands of NYPD Officers and officers from other New York departments attended Tsakos' funeral in May 2021.

The 14-year-veteran of the police force left behind a widow, a three-year-old son and six-year-old daughter. His widow Irene Tsakos was photographed at the new wellness center bearing his name.
