Northport Police Blotter: $8.2K Identity Theft Scam Reported

Thousands of dollars were charged to a woman's credit card through eBay, police say. ALSO: Man drives over landscape garden, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 6 through Jan. 12.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A beached sailboat with no registration was found on Woodbine Avenue on Jan. 7. The Huntington Harbormaster was notified.
  • A woman went to police headquarters on Jan. 8 to report a possible phone scam. She told police she received a phone call from someone claiming to work for Optimum telling her she was late for a payment and asked her to send a check to a P.O. Box in California. The woman became skeptical and called Optimum to confirm her account balance was up to date. The woman did not send a check and wished to file a report for informational purposes only.
  • A Johnston Avenue woman reported an identity theft on Jan. 8. The woman told police that, over the past few months, someone had been using her credit card on eBay, resulting in several unauthorized transactions totaling $8,268.43. The woman said she had already contacted her bank, which is refunding the full amount. The woman received a package from eBay that she did not order and was advised to return it.
  • A man was arrested in connection with driving over a landscape garden at the Harborview condos and onto Cairo Avenue on Jan. 11, police said. The man told police the gate was not opening so he drove around, police said.
  • Nails were found in the roadway on Church Street on Jan. 11. Officers removed the nails.
