Northport Police Blotter: Camper Asked To Leave Park; Flood Rescues

ALSO: A man drove with a suspended registration after his license had previously been suspended 34 times, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY —Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Aug. 12 through Aug. 18.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A damaged Intex inflatable chair was recovered from a storm drain at Northport Harbor near the bottom of Main Street on Aug. 12.
  • A man was seen operating a Jeep on Main Street after the vehicle's registration had been suspended for an insurance lapse, police said on Aug. 13. A check of DMV records revealed that the driver had his license suspended 34 times on six dates, police said. The man was issued multiple summonses instead of being arrested, police said.
  • A man reported a solar panel missing from his boat on Northport Bay on Aug. 14.
  • A vehicle's rear window was damaged on Gilbert Street on Aug. 14. A landscaping business owner told officers that one of his employees was weed whacking and hit a rock that went into the back window of a vehicle, causing the window to shatter. The business owner said he has already contacted someone to repair the window and he will cover all costs through his insurance. The officer spoke with the caller, who stated that the vehicle is her work vehicle and she needs to document the incident for informational purposes and she will follow up on the repair with the business owner.
  • A motor vehicle collision was reported on Bayview Avenue on Aug. 14. A man said his vehicle was parked when another vehicle collided into his front driver's side bumper. The two vehicle owners exchanged information.
  • A man went to police headquarters on Aug. 14 to report that he lost a ring he purchased for his wife. He said he lost the ring in his backyard on July 6. He requested a police report to submit to his insurance company.
  • Summonses were issued to cars parked illegally on Bayview Avenue on Aug. 14.
  • The owner of a 2015 Chevrolet bearing a Florida registration was issued a summons for illegally blocking a driveway on Bayview Avenue on Aug. 14.
  • Dogs got loose near the Northport Sewer Plant on Aug. 15. Police recovered the dogs and brought them back to their owner's home. The owner was ticketed for unleashed dogs.
  • A boat broke loose from its mooring on Harbor Park Court on Aug. 16.
  • A patrolling officer saw a large camping tent at Steers Park around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 16. The man told the officer he was trying to camp out for the night because the state park at Sunken Meadow was currently closed. The officer told the man to break down the tent and leave the area, to which he agreed.
  • An open burn was reported in a Fleet Court backyard. A man said he threw a towel that had flammable adhesive onto a pile of scrap wood, and the wood became engulfed in flames. The man extinguished the fire before it was able to spread. The man was warned and admonished about open burns within the village. The Northport Fire Department chief deemed the area safe.
  • A dog got loose on Woodbine Avenue on Aug. 17. The dog was recovered and escorted back to its owner's home. The owner was issued an appearance ticket for an unleashed dog.
  • A woman was reportedly being aggressive with the staff of Bistro 44 and refusing to leave on Aug. 17. An officer spoke with business owner who stated the woman had left and there is no problem.
  • A dog got loose on Woodbine Avenue on Aug. 18. The dog was recovered and escorted back to its owner's home. The owner was not at her home. The officer left a voice message on her cell phone and issued her an appearance ticket for an unleashed dog.
  • A disruptive customer reportedly refused to leave Starbucks on Fort Salonga Road when asked to on Aug. 18. The person eventually left.
  • A Nautilus Avenue homeowner was in need after excessive flooding around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 18. An officer helped the homeowner get a water pump to start removing the water.
  • Someone found a loose dog on Woodbine Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Aug. 18. The dog had no identification. The founder handed the dog over at police headquarters.
  • A vehicle was found in flood waters on Woodbine Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Aug. 18. An officer helped the owner call a tow truck.
