Northport Police Blotter: Check Washing Scam Reported

ALSO: Firefighters douse car fire; passenger refused to leave Uber; loose dog rescued; and more, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Dec. 23 through Dec. 29.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A woman said her landlord was using a kitchen stovetop as a heating source for a Main Street residence. The woman expressed concern about the potential fire hazard and risks associated with the practice. An officer told the landlord on Dec. 23 to refrain from using the stovetop as a heat source for the home.
  • An officer saw a person urinating in public on Woodbine Avenue on Dec. 23.
  • A dog got loose on Bayview Avenue on Dec. 24. An officer found the dog and returned it to its owner.
  • An Uber driver called an officer to Grove Street around 1:50 a.m. Dec. 25 for a report of a passenger who refused to leave the Uber car. The Uber driver told the officer that his passenger did not have another stop on his Uber trip. The officer then spoke with the passenger, who agreed to leave the Uber and said that he thought he booked a second stop on the Uber app. The passenger refused to identify himself to the officer but left the area without incident.
  • A dog owner was warned and admonished for having possibly been walking his dog without a leash in Village Park on Dec. 26.
  • A multi-vehicle crash was reported on Rinaldo Road on Dec. 26. Northport police waited for Suffolk officers to arrive.
  • A woman told police on Dec. 27 that two checks were cashed fraudulently from her mother's bank account. The woman said she wrote out to the Town of Wellfleet for property taxes owed in Massachusetts and placed the check, worth approximately $1,270, in the drop box on Main Street. On Dec. 12, the same check, which was now altered, was cashed remotely in the amount of $5,254.12 to an individual. On Dec. 16, a second fraudulent check was created and cashed remotely in the amount of $456.11 to another individual. A transfer from the account in the amount of $7,000 to a third individual was attempted but stopped by the bank and reversed. The woman filed a report with the Wellfleet Police Department and wished to file a report with Northport police, too.
  • Police were called to Fort Salonga Road for a vehicle fire on Dec. 29. The officer interviewed the driver, who said that he heard noise coming from his vehicle while traveling westbound on Fort Salonga Road. He said that upon pulling over, he noticed that the vehicle was on fire. The Northport Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
