Northport Police Blotter: Gift Card Scams Reported

One scammer pretended to be a representative from a local church and sent emails to a woman asking for gift cards, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from March 10 through March 16.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Northport police responded to Peterborough Drive to assist Suffolk police with an active house fire on March 10.
  • A woman told police on March 10 that someone scammed her mother was into buying gift cards. The woman's bank was contacted and stated that the funds will be reimbursed.
  • A woman went to police headquarters on March 11 to report a gift card scam. She told police that she received an email from the pastor at St. Pauls Methodist church looking for donations of gift cards. She then purchased six gift cards, police said. The woman said she was asked by the pastor to send the gift card information over by email but before she did so, she received an additional email from the church stating the first email is a scam. Police went through the woman's email transactions and determined the gift card information was never sent. The woman did not lose any money and wanted to document the incident for informational purposes.
  • A driver was charged with DWI after he sped from Laurel Avenue to Scudder Avenue and through the First National Bank parking lot on March 11, police said.
  • Police helped an elderly woman who could not stand up on her own get back to her feet on Earl Avenue on March 13.
  • Tickets were issued to people for open containers in place of arrests at Constitution Square on March 13, police said.
  • A woman was arrested after police said she stole two 24-ounce cans of Modelo beer from CVS on Fort Salonga Road on March 15.
  • A telephone pole on Lewis Avenue broke on March 16 after a tree fell on it. PSEG Long Island was notified. The company fixed the pole and removed the tree.
