Northport Police Blotter: Man Drove After Smoking Marijuana

His driver's license had 14 suspensions, police say. ALSO: Woman overdoses; and golf cart stolen; police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from April 22 through April 28.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Joseph Marte, 31, of West 170s block of New York City, was driving a red 2015 Honda on Elwood Road around 3:45 a.m. April 24 when he swerved over the double-yellow line that divides the roadway several times, police said. Police stopped his car and smelled burning marijuana coming from inside the Honda, police said. Marte admitted to smoking in the car earlier in the night, police said. Marte provided police with a photo of his Florida's driver's license on his phone, police said. Police determined Marte had a suspended New York permit with a total of 14 scoff law suspensions (13 scoffs on 10 dates), police said. Marte was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation: 10 or more suspensions, no/expired insurance, unsafe lane change, and consumption of cannabis in motor vehicle. He was issued a desk appearance ticket to return to court on May 6.

Incidents

  • A woman overdosed on Maple Street on April 22. Northport firefighters brought her to Huntington Hospital.
  • Police responded to a crash on Fort Salonga Road on April 22. Officers waited for Suffolk police to arrive.
  • Two dogs got loose on Beach Avenue on April 22. She was able to find one and told police she would find the second one without help.
  • PSEG LI was contacted about a downed wire on Main Street around 10:25 a.m. April 23.
  • An unconscious male was reported at Britannia Yachting Center and taken to Huntington Hospital on April 23.
  • Two dogs were running around the area of Mariners Lane on April 25. Officers were able to secure the dogs and bring them back to their owner's home.
  • A golf cart was reported stolen from Seymour's Boat Yard on April 26. The caller said the golf cart was left on the dock overnight, and when he came in the following the day, the golf cart was missing. The caller had video footage of three people driving off with the golf cart without his permission. Police found the golf cart on Bayview Avenue. There was no damage or missing items.
  • A refrigerator was on the road of Burt Avenue with its doors still attached on April 26. Police spoke with the owner who agreed to bring the refrigerator in and take the doors off if they decide to put it back out to the road.
  • A Lisa Drive man told police on April 27 that he was getting unwanted threatening phone calls. He told police that he believes he was part of a scam and keeps getting phone calls where someone he doesn't know is demanding money from him. He said he deleted the original texts and phone numbers and wanted to document the incident. Police told him to ignore any contact over the phone and to call the department if it continues.
  • A woman fell and suffered injuries in the parking lot of the Northport Yacht Club on April 27.
