Northport Police Blotter: Man Thwarts Identity Theft, Larceny Attempt
ALSO: Woman's bag stolen from car; man got vehicle stuck in sand; and youths kick lobster pot into water, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from July 1 through July 7.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- A man got sick on July 1, possibly from ingesting a toxic substance, police said. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
- A Jay Court woman on July 1 said she received an email with an attached invoice for a successful renewal and activation of an antivirus product. She told police she did not authorize any renewal nor does she have PayPal account, which the antivirus product was purchased with. The woman said she checked with all her banking institutions and confirmed she did not incur any losses.
- Police responded to Norwood Avenue for a report of a possible squatter on July 1. A man told police that he and his mother moved into a Norwood Avenue address about a week ago. The man contacted his mother, who said she found the property on Craigslist and pays someone named Kenny on the first of every month. The woman could not provide the police officers with any documentation or lease agreement stating that she is legitimately renting the home.
- A dog got loose on Woodbine Avenue on July 1. Officers could not find the dog.
- A woman reported a petty larceny that happened in Municipal Lot #2 on July 2. The woman said she walked in the park and had left her motor vehicle's door unlocked. When she returned, she saw that a small leather bag containing property was missing from her front seat.
- Officers found a dog and returned it to its owner on Woodside Avenue on July 2.
- A man reported an attempted identity theft and larceny on July 2. The man said that two days prior, his home phone would ring once and then go silent. The man said that when he would answer the phone, only a dial tone could be heard. The man said he contacted Optimum regarding the issue and was made aware that incoming calls to his home phone were now being transferred to a different phone number. The man informed Optimum that he did not authorize the transfer of calls and that his account must have been hacked. Optimum was able to provide the man with new account information and discontinued the transfer. While working with Optimum to create a new account, the man received a call from the HSBC Bank fraud division, stating they received a one time transfer request of $13,200. The HSBC representative informed the man that the request came from the same number involved in the Optimum hack. The man said the fraud division was able to decline the request and he did not sustain any loss. The man said he is in the process of changing all his HSBC account information.
- A dog got loose on Reservoir Avenue on July 4. Officers could not find the dog.
- A man and woman were separated during a fight by police at Feed and Grain on July 4.
- A summons was issued to a driver who was doing donuts in the parking lot of Scudder Park on July 4.
- A vehicle got stuck in the sand of Scudder Park on Beach Avenue on July 5. The driver was issued an appearance ticket for unauthorized use of village property.
- A motor vehicle collision was reported on Fort Salonga Road on July 5. Northport police and Suffolk police worked together at the scene.
- A boat operator violated NAV Law 45.1B for speeding in excess of 5 mph, causing a wake in Northport Harbor on July 5.
- People were ticketed for drinking alcohol on the dock on July 6 and July 7.
- Two youths kicked a lobster pot into the water of Woodbine Marina on July 7. Police warned and admonished the youths, whose parents picked them up.
