Northport Police Blotter: Man Ticketed In Hit-And-Run Collision

ALSO: Gym bag stolen from car; and ski mask stolen from drug store, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 20 through Jan. 26.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A vehicle got stuck in the roadway of Fort Salonga Road on Jan. 21, blocking traffic. Officers requested a heavy duty tow and assisted with traffic control while vehicle was being moved. The driver was issued a traffic ticket for disobeying a traffic control device indicating "no trucks."
  • A gym bag was stolen from a vehicle on Fort Salonga Road West on Jan. 22, police said. A man told police that a man in his late 60s wearing a green jacket opened his unlocked vehicle to steal his gym bag and then proceeded to walk westbound on Fort Salonga Road, police said. The man said he followed the man westbound down the street where he recovered his bag on the side of the road, police said. The officer could not find the gym bag thief, police said.
  • A pole transformer caught fire on Main Street on Jan. 22. An electric line was causing a small flame on the utility pole, and police watched as the fire extinguished itself. The Northport Fire Department contacted PSEG to follow up with service to the power lines.
  • A man was issued a summons in connection with leaving the scene of an incident on Fort Salonga Road on Jan. 24, police said. A woman was stopped at a red light waiting to make a left turn from Fort Salonga Road onto Laurel Road when a grey Honda made a sharp left turn in front of her car and collided into her car's front end around 4:45 p.m., police said. The man continued driving eastbound on Fort Salonga Road and never stopped to provide insurance information, the woman told police. The woman gave the license plate number to the police, which came back as an address in the village, police said. The registered owner of the Honda told police her husband was driving the vehicle and was on his way to Stony Brook Hospital to give a presentation, police said. The man told police that that he did collide with a vehicle and pulled over, but after not seeing another driver, he drove away, police said. The officer advised the man that he was being issued a summons for leaving the scene of an incident and needed to return for court in February, police said.
  • Police were called to Jones Drug Store on Main Street for a theft on Jan. 24. An employee said a teenager entered the store and lingered for a few minutes before stealing a black knit ski mask from a rack and leaving the store without paying, police said. The total cost of the mask is $8.68. An officer identified the thief as a known teenager from the area. The teenager's parent was contacted, and the situation was explained to her. The mother paid for the mask, and the teenager was spoken to regarding the situation. Everyone was satisfied with the outcome.
