Northport Police Blotter: Man Tricked By Scammer Claiming To Be From Medicare
ALSO: Woman choking at Birdie Bar saved by employee; man reports $2.9K fraudulent charge on card; and more, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Feb. 17 through Feb. 23.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- A tree fell onto a house on Union Place on Feb. 17. The damage to the house was minimal, police said. The tree was village property, and the Northport Highway Department was notified.
- The top half of a large pine tree fell onto a Soper Avenue home's yard and fence on Feb. 17. A resident said the tree hit the house. She said she would contact someone to inspect the home for damage.
- A man who claimed he was representing the bank that held the mortgage for the property knocked on a door on Mariners Lane to inquire about a late payment on Feb. 19. The man didn't seem knowledgeable on the proceedings and wasn't aware of which bank held the mortgage note, the homeowner told police. The man wanted the incident documented for informational purposes. He was advised to contact the police department if the man comes back.
- A man went to police headquarters to report a possible identity theft on Feb. 20. The man said that, last week, he received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Medicare advising him about a new membership card. The caller stated he needed the man's current Medicare number and his Social Security Number, which the man provided over the phone. After realizing this possibly could have been a scam call, the man contacted Medicare, to which they stated that it was not their organization and to take the necessary precautions. At this time, the man has not suffered any monetary loss and nothing has been opened up in his name that he is aware of, police said.
- A man went to police headquarters on Feb. 20 to report that his wallet has been missing since Feb. 15. He believes he lost his wallet at home or on his way to the supermarket that afternoon. He said that no charges have been made on credit cards, but he froze them out of precaution. The man said he will continue to search for the wallet and will advise the department if he is able to locate it.
- A woman was choking at Birdie Bar on Fort Salonga Road on Feb. 20. By the time police arrived, an employee of Birdie Bar had performed the Heimlich maneuver on the woman.
- Police helped jumpstart someone's car on Main Street after the battery died on Feb. 21.
- A woman went to police headquarters to say that she provided a copy of her driver's license to possible unauthorized Facebook security personnel. The woman said she tried to re-activate a Facebook account and received an email from an unknown user requesting a photo of her driver's license. After providing the photo, the woman became weary of the request and asked to document the incident for informational purposes. The woman has not reported any financial losses or any cases of identity theft at the time of her report.
- A man went to police headquarters on Feb. 22 to document fraudulent charges to his account. The man said that he was notified by TD Bank of suspicious activity on his Visa Credit Card by way of a $2,950 purchase of gym equipment from a Los Angeles-based company. The man said he immediately contacted TD Bank and informed a representative that the charges were fraudulent and that he intends to formally dispute the activity. The man said his card was deactivated, he received a replacement credit card and all funds were credited back to his account. The complainant wanted the incident documented for informational purposes.
- A water main burst in the Northport Library, causing a flood, on Feb. 22.
- A woman was knocking on car windows in a parking lot on Fort Salonga Road on Feb. 23. Police told her to stop, which she agreed to do.
- A dog got loose on Soper Avenue on Feb. 23. Police searched the area but could not find the dog.
