Opinion: To Those Concerned About School Shootings

A parent gives his opinion on school shootings and metal detectors.

TO ALL THOSE CONCERNED ABOUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS: by East Northport resident David Blumberg

As a concerned parent JUST like each and every parent who has a student in the school. I would like to make a suggestion to you.

A thought that may be an expensive one but one that is much less expensive in monetary value than that of the life of a child.

The lives of the entire community, school, and then the families that are touched when one life is taken in a senseless school school shooting, is just a tip of the iceberg.

It is with out question that we need to stop the guns from getting into the schools. This is not a question the question is how. The cost is not a question. Compare to that of Lives at stake. No one is going to argue with anyone about that either.

The question is how???

The cost of which is not something that you or I can really begin to put a dollar value on. There is no dollar amount worth life. We, as parents, would all stand in front of a car to save the life of our child, so dollars can not be spoken about at all.

It would be a huge step in the right direction if we locked down these schools. I do not think that Guns are not cause, but the guns in the wrong hands at the wrong places are.

It would be my suggestion to put metal detectors at the front doors of schools and stop guns from entering the schools entirely. Lock down the rest of the doors with camera’s, locks, and guards, if needed as they mostly are already.

Would it be difficult and cost money, of course. But, once again I pose the question of what is just one child's life worth? I would certainly step in front of a train or trade my car, boat or house for my child’s life. As I strongly suspect any parent would. Thus the dollar cost to accomplish this becomes moot at best. I urge you to bring this idea to the powers that be. Make the suggestion and stop these senseless shootings from occurring ASAP.

I respectful submit this suggestion and would welcome all feedback.
