What’s Next For Northport Schools? Community Invited To Chart The Future Together
Residents can join Nov. 12 workshop on "Future-Focused Learning" at Northport High School
NORTHPORT, NY — The Northport–East Northport Union Free School District is inviting residents to take part in the next COMPASS community workshop on Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at Northport High School.
The session will focus on Future-Focused Learning — one of the most discussed topics from the district’s first COMPASS workshop held on Oct. 6 — and is open to all residents, regardless of whether they attended the earlier session.
“Education continues to evolve, and this is an opportunity for our community to have a voice in what that looks like for students here in our community,” said COMPASS Community Co-Chair Molly Feeney Wood. “Together, we can ensure our schools provide relevant and meaningful learning experiences that prepare every student for life beyond high school.”

The COMPASS initiative — short for Charting Our Future Together — is a yearlong series of community workshops aimed at developing a long-range plan that reflects the district’s shared values and priorities among residents, families, and staff.
“At the first workshop, there was great dialogue happening at each table by community members,” said COMPASS Community Chair Lynn Cromeyn. “It’s a great way to both inform the community and engage them in meaningful discussion.”

During the Nov. 12 event, participants will explore how education is changing to prepare students for success after graduation. Following a brief presentation from district leaders, attendees will collaborate in small groups to define what Future-Focused Learning means for Northport–East Northport. Topics will include artificial intelligence, life-readiness skills, classroom technology, personalized learning, and hands-on experiences through STEM and career pathway programs.
“This process is about listening, learning, and collaborating,” Wood added. “At our first community workshop, families and staff made it clear that preparing students for the future through career pathways, technology, and personalized learning is a key priority. This discussion builds directly on that feedback.”
District leaders will also present a summary of feedback from the first session and explain how that input is guiding the next phases of the COMPASS process. Residents can view the video and read the summary on the district’s website at northport.k12.ny.us/COMPASS.
“We are off to a good start and look forward to engaging many more people from the community in our next workshops,” said Ron Gaudreault, COMPASS Community Chair.
