Village Of Croton-On-Hudson Issues Important Back-To-School Safety Reminder

With the opening of the 2025-2026 school year this Tuesday, expect to see students walking, biking or waiting for the bus.

With the opening of the 2025-2026 school year this Tuesday, September 2nd, you should expect to see students walking, biking or waiting at school bus stops. The Village of Croton-on-Hudson asks all drivers to commit to drive safely and be mindful of speed limits.

As a reminder, the speed limit on most Village roadways is set at 25 MPH. Drivers should be extra cautious in our school speed zones along Gerstein Street, Glen Place, Hughes Street, Larkin Place and Maple Street. Speed limits in these school zones between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on school days are 20 MPH on Maple Street and 15 MPH in all other school speed zones.

New this year are rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) which have been installed at the mid-block crosswalk on Grand Street and Wood Road. This new RRFB joins the existing RRFB at the mid-block crossing on Maple Street that leads to PVC Middle School. Pedestrians looking to cross at either location should press the button to activate the RRFB system. If you see the beacons flashing, someone is waiting to cross or in the process of crossing the street. Remember to always yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk; it’s the law!

New sidewalks are also in the process of being constructed on portions of Thompson Avenue and Whelan Avenue to help create safer routes to school. These sidewalks should be completed by the end of next week, weather-permitting.

Drivers should be prepared to stop, on both sides of the street, for school buses with flashing red lights as required by the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. This applies even for streets with dividers or islands such as Benedict Boulevard. Drivers should be extra alert and cautious as there will also be students walking and riding their bicycles to and from school.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our streets safe for all!
