Laura Curran Declared Winner In Nassau County Executive Race
"Tonight, Nassau voted to end the culture of corruption and give our county the fresh start it desperately deserves."

Laura Curran, a Democrat, was officially declared by party leaders the winner of the Nassau County executive race on Tuesday night.
Curran narrowly defeated Jack Martins, a Republican. Cassandra Lems, a Green Party member, was also on the ballot.
Curran will replace current County Executive Ed Mangano, who did not run for re-election. Mangano was indicted in 2016.

"Tonight, Nassau voted to end the culture of corruption and give our county the fresh start it desperately deserves," Curran said in her acceptance speech.
Curran said she looks to make Nassau County a better place for all its residents. She will be the first female Nassau County Executive in Long Island history, according to WNBC Long Island.

The official votes were (with 99.58 percent of precincts reporting):
- Martins— 138,561
- Curran—146,318
- Lems— 1,969
Martins released the following statement on the election: "Thank you to all those who supported us and went out and stood for a brighter future for Nassau -- looking forward instead of looking back. I have called to congratulate my opponent, Laura Curran, on her win. I encourage everyone to work together to put partisanship aside to restore trust in government and get Nassau back on the right track."

About Curran:
From the League of Women Voters: Curran is currently serving her second term as a Democrat Nassau County Legislator, representing Nassau Legislative District 5. Her previous elected office was on the Baldwin School Board for 3 ½ years, including one year as president. In her earlier career, Laura was a reporter for the NY Daily News and NY Post and also taught journalism at SUNY Purchase. Laura earned a BA in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College. She now lives in Baldwin with her husband and three daughters. Read more about Curran here.
