7 Park Slope-Area Streets Get New Names: Pietro Sclafani Way, Nicholas Heyward Sr. Place

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Several streets in and around Park Slope will be co-named in honor of local leaders and beloved community figures after getting the City Council's approval on Tuesday.

The streets — two in Park Slope and five in the surrounding area — were among nearly 200 across the city that passed the Council's parks committee on Tuesday. Each new name was proposed by local groups or individuals and approved by a community board before reaching the Council, which signs off on co-namings near the end of each year.

Here's a rundown of each new street name in and around Park Slope:

In Park Slope:

Joseph Ferris Way

• Location: Southeast corner of Seventh Avenue and Third Street.
• Background: The corner, actually renamed in late November, is in honor of a former assembly member who died at 85 years old from coronavirus last year. Ferris served in the state assembly from 1975 to 1984 representing Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Sunset Park and Borough Park, and was also prominent in local organizations, according to his obituary in the Brooklyn Paper.

Pietro Sclafani Way

• Location: At the intersection of 11th Street and Sixth Avenue.
• Background: Restaurateur Pietro Sclafani owns several eateries hailed recently for creating a "new Little Italy" in Park Slope. The co-naming will be found steps away from his longest-standing restaurant, Bar Toto, which opened in 2001.

Near Park Slope:

Kenneth Casilla Way

• Location: Intersection of Baltic Avenue and 3rd Avenue
• Background: Known as Kenneth ‘Nu Money” Casilla, the up-and-coming Brooklyn rapper was fatally shot in Miami in 2013, according to reports.

Nicholas Heyward Sr. Place

• Location: At the intersection of Bond Street and Baltic Street
• Background: The father of 13-year-old Nicholas Heyward Jr. — who was shot and killed by police at the Gowanus Houses in 1994 — Nicholas Heyward Sr. became a prominent activist against police brutality. He died in 2019 at 61 years old, according to his obituary.

• Location: Bond Street between Baltic Street and Butler Street

Salvatore “Buddy” Scotto Way

• Location: South East Corner of 1st Place and Court Street, from Court Street to Smith Street
• Background: Scotto, a beloved community leader in Carroll Gardens, died last year at 91 years old. A third-generation funeral director at Scotto Funeral Home, he was known as the "unofficial Mayor of Carroll Gardens" for his many roles in the neighborhood, according to reports.

Andreas Stylianou Way

• Location: Intersection of Third Avenue and Seventh Street
• Background: Stylianou, the owner of nearby New Millennium Motors, was killed in late 2019 on the block in a deadly car crash.
