The Battle of Brooklyn Lives On Through This Series of Free Neighborhood Events
The 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn is being remembered in and around Park Slope this month. Here's how to celebrate it.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — While "The Battle of Brooklyn" sounds like the subtitle to a contemporary comic book movie, it actually refers to one of the initial salvos of the Revolutionary War, now celebrating its 240th anniversary.
To remember the event, a series of historically-themed events are scheduled through Aug. 28, put on by the Old Stone House, the Brooklyn Historical Society, and other area organizations.

- A free lecture by historian Nicole Eustace on the impact emotion played in the lives of revolutionary-era actors (Aug. 18, 6:30 p.m., at the Brooklyn Historical Society)
- A walking tour of key locations related to the Battle of Brooklyn led by William J. Parry, a professor of archaeology at Hunter College (Aug. 19 and 27 at 6 p.m. leaving from Grand Army Plaza, $10 per person)
- A week-long exhibit of revolutionary-era flags at Green-Wood Cemetery (running from Aug. 20 through Aug. 28)
- A free walk along Denyse Wharf, the Brooklyn beachhead where British troops landed in 1776, accentuated by historical re-enactors (Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Belt Parkway’s 4th Avenue Overpass)
- A free family-friendly trivia battle and scavenger hunt at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center (Aug. 27, 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Building 92)
- And dramatic readings of the Declaration of Independence in its original 18th-century style (August 27, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Vander Ende-Onderdonk House; a $5 donation is requested)
