EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN — An 18-year-old man was killed around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday when he was shot in the head outside Public School 13, an elementary school located one block from Thomas Jefferson High School in East New York, police said.

The young man’s friends identified him to the New York Daily News as Darnell Wilkerson, a recent graduate of Jefferson.

Another 17-year-old boy was also hit in the right arm in the after-school shooting, but is expected to live, police said. The second victim was identified to the Daily News as John Trinidad, a friend of Wilkerson’s and a current student at the high school.

The NYPD said three suspects were taken into custody immediately after the shooting, and that a weapon was recovered at the scene.

Denise Covelle, a commenter on the News 12 Brooklyn story covering the shooting, wrote: “I was there picking up my granddaughter from PS13, it was like something from an episode of Law &Order SVU. I was scared and angry at the same time. Blocks and blocks were closed off. I was thankful to see my granddaughter walk out the school. Something has to give, too much violence.”
