UPDATE: Car Hits Cyclist on Union Street and Sixth Avenue

UPDATE, May 9, 1:16 p.m.: According to an NYPD spokesman, the car had the right of way. Witnesses told police that the car was driving south on Sixth Avenue and made a left-hand turn at Union Street while the driver had a green light.

The bicyclist was riding on Union Street from Seventh Avenue, but ran a red light at the intersection of Sixth Avenue.

Police said that the cyclist flew off his bike after the collision, but only suffered “cuts and scratches” and was not seriously injured.  

A bicyclist was hit by a car at the intersection of Union Street and Sixth Avenue on Sunday, an FDNY spokesman said.

The collision occurred at around 8:59 a.m. and left the cyclist bleeding from the head, but he was “awake and breathing,” the spokesman said.

The biker was transported to Kings County Hospital.

An FDNY official said that the car left the scene before officials arrived.

A woman who witnessed the car hit the biker E-mailed Patch and said she “heard a crash” and saw the biker on the sidewalk with blood running down his face.

She also said that she saw a black car with no license plates stop and then drive off northbound on Sixth Avenue.

An NYPD spokesman said that they did not immediately have any information on the accident.
