Piano and Vocal Work by Liszt and Faure

Where/When: Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, 58 7th Ave, Friday at 8 p.m.

Why Go: This recital explores the first compositional representations of the dissolution of tonality in western music, a process that began in the 1880s and continued into the 1920s, pioneered by the great Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt and Gabriel Fauré, spurring on the birth of new possibilities in harmony

Political Mother @ BAM

Where/When: Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Ave, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Hofesh Shechter Company
presents Political Mother, a gritty and emotional dance exploring struggle and conflict. The dance centers around repression and resistance. Something new to be experienced is the heavy metal rock band providing the dancers with raw music.

Bklyn Larder Cheese Socials

Where/When: Brooklyn Larder, 228 Flatbush Ave, Friday at 9 p.m.

Why Go: Classes include a "cheese counter tour," tastings and information on complimentary parings.

Gowanus Open Studios 2012

Where/When: 168 7th St, Saturday at 12 p.m.

Why Go: Featuring over 150 artists located throughout Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal area, visitors to this free event can meet Brooklyn artists within the intimacy of their work spaces. This annual event encourages the appreciation and practice of art in the broader community by providing an opportunity to speak with artists and gain a firsthand view of art-making. The studios are in industrial buildings, garages, brownstones and warehouses. Painters, sculptors, jewelers, ceramicists, installation artists, performers, photographers, printmakers, and mixed media artists are all opening their studio doors to the public.

Spoke the Hub's Director's Choice Showcases

Where/When: 295 Douglass St, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Come see a showcase of emerging dancers and choreographers who made outstanding new work for our concerts this year. This year’s featured artists include: L’Oiseau Bleu, with Stephanie Fribourg; Caliince Dance, with Pauline Legras; Amy Miller; Eliza Ladd and Sarah Holmes.

Cost: $15 

Concert on the Slope    

Where/When: Saint John's Episcopal Church, 139 Saint Johns Pl, Sunday at 3 p.m.

Why Go: An afternoon of music for voice and piano with Laura Strickling, soprano, Elspeth Davis, mezzo-soprano, and Dmitri Dover, piano. Includes songs by Debussy, Schubert, Ullmann, Oldham, Poulence and Faure, plus two traditional Yiddish folk songs.

Cost: Free!
