ICYMI: Historic Balcony Uncovered During Park Slope Theater Renovation

The feature is believed to be from the Sanders Theatre that opened in 1928.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — When Patch reached out to Nitehawk Cinemas last week to ask about construction being pushed back at the old Park Slope Pavilion, from fall 2017 until winter 2018, a spokeswoman told us it was due to demolition taking longer than expected.

It turns out the answer is actually cooler than that.

Crews discovered the remains of an old balcony in between the first and second floors of the theater that likely dates back to the days of the Sanders Theatre, Nitehawk's Alexa Harrison now tells Patch.

Nitehawk is hoping to preserve parts of the balcony, which is just one of "several original fixtures and adornments unearthed that we are hoping to keep," Harrison told Patch.

The old balcony would seem to fit in well with Nitehawk's plans for the theater, an upscale cinema that features a bar, restaurant and second-floor views of Prospect Park.

The $10 million project will bring much-needed upgrades to the tattered building, which fell into a state of disrepair late in its Pavilion days.

The theater originally opened in 1928 as Sanders, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, before closing 50 years later.

Nitehawk is set to open early next year.
