Mike Lupica, Other Staffers Laid Off From NY Daily News: Report

The latest in a series of downsizings.

The New York Daily News was hit Wednesday with another round of layoffs, according to a report on Politico attributed to “sources at the News.”

High-profile staffers axed on Wednesday reportedly include Mike Lupica — a prominent and provocative sports columnist who’s been with the News since 1977 — and sports editor Teri Thompson.

According to Politico’s sources, “news management and Lupica, who enjoyed one of the newsroom’s top salaries, were unable to come to terms on a new contract.” (ESPN also recently let Lupica go from his slot on ESPN New York radio.)

Another longtime sports writer at the News, Filip Bondy, tweeted that he was among those laid off, as did columnist and editorial board member Bill Hammond.

The scope of the layoffs is still unclear, but sources at the News told Politico they impacted other departments at the paper as well as the newsroom.
