New Mexican Restaurant Fills Gap In Park Slope, Neighbors Say

Alma Negra recently opened at a storefront on Fourth Avenue and 12th Street that's seen a lot of turnover during the past few years.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A sleek Mexican restaurant recently opened on the border of Park Slope, filling what neighbors say is a gap in the southern part of the neighborhood.

Alma Negra opened its doors last week at 494 Fourth Avenue — a storefront on the corner of 12th Street that's been home to a few businesses in the past several years, most recently including a taco spot that closed during the pandemic and a short-lived lobster chain outpost.

Neighbors, though, are hoping that this eatery lasts longer, noting that Fourth Avenue doesn't have as many local restaurants as more commercial and residential stretches of the neighborhood.

"There aren't too many restaurants on this stretch of Fourth Avenue," one local posted. "Hope this new one does well."

Another echoed a similar sentiment: "FINALLY a restaurant is in on Fourth and 12th that's a solid neighborhood find," they wrote on Google Maps, where many neighbors have written positive reviews since the restaurant's opening.

The restaurant, which has a stylish black-and-wood interior with gold accents and dim lighting, offers a nice ambience and tasty food, neighbors say.

"Beautiful spot for a date night or casual night out with friends," one wrote. "Food was delicious, service was great, and the restaurant is super cute," said another.

The menu is filled with classic Mexican fare, among which neighbors most recommend the crab quesadilla, shrimp aguachile, pork tacos and guacamole. There's also some vegan and vegetarian options, like vegetable mole and cactus-filled tamales.

Alma Negra is open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Monday.
