Nitehawk Cinema Construction Pushed Back

Construction on the posh, new theater at the old Pavilion won't be finished until a few months later than originally projected.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — When Nitehawk Cinema took over the decrepit Pavilion Theater, construction was originally slated to be completed just a few months from now, in Fall 2017.

Now, the company says it won't be open for a few months after that, with a new target open date of winter 2018.

Alexa Harrison, a spokeswoman for Nitehawk Cinema, told Patch in an email that "The demo process took a bit longer than anticipated, but construction is under way."

Nitehawk is building an upscale, boozy movie-watching experience to the Park Slope-Windsor Terrace-area, similar to its popular location in Williamsburg.

The $10 million project will include a bar and restaurant inside the theater, a balcony view of Prospect Park and an elevator to the top floor.

The work will include "upgrading the building systems and modernizing the space including adding an elevator, cosmetically refurbishing the public areas, bathrooms, [and] adding new theater seats," Nitehawk said.

That will be a far cry from the peeling paint, shag carpeting and just generally depressing vibe that the Pavilion gave off in its final days.

Fears that the beleaguered theater would instead turn into yet another glittering apartment tower were quashed last August, when Hidrock Properties sold the property to an investment group for $28 million.

The theater shut down last fall, with a boozy farewell party for people in the neighborhood to say goodbye.
