Photo of the Day: Kentile Floors Sign from F Train

If you ride the F train, you probably see the giant eight-story-tall sign that announces, “Kentile Floors” up into the Gownaus Canal’s skyline.

The tile flooring company, Kentile Floors, was founded in 1898 by Arthur Kennedy and first had factories in Long Island and Queens. In 1949, a third factory was built on Second Avenue along the canal and the sign was erected.

Kentile made vinyl and asphalt floor tiles for homes, but many of the tiles were made with asbestos — a carcinogen that led to lawsuits. By 1992 Kentile Floors went bankrupt and eventually went out of business a few years later.

But now, the sign still stands. And it is an iconic symbol of the area.
