Two Firefighters Receive Minor Injuries in Prospect Avenue Fire

Mid-afternoon blaze leaves one adult and two children homeless.

A fire on the first floor of a Prospect Avenue residential building sent two firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries and badly damaged a first-floor apartment.

One adult and two children had lived in the unit, and were provided emergency housing, food and clothing by the Red Cross, a spokesman for the organization said.

The blaze broke out just before 2:11 p.m. at 462 Prospect Ave., a four-story brick building between Prospect Park West and Eighth Avenue, an FDNY spokesman said.

Twelve fire trucks and about 60 firefighters fought the flames, which were under control by 2:32 p.m. The injured firefighters were sent to Methodist Hospital, the spokesman said.

After the fire was extinguished, residents and neighbors stood outside as crews came in to board up the smashed-first floor windows.

Nelson Lozano, 27, who lives next store and works at nearby Prospect Hardware, saw the smoke coming out of the building and grabbed his brother.

"We ran to ring everyone's bell. Luckily everyone got out OK," he said.
