8 Arrested at Sobriety Checkpoint: Suffolk Police

The overnight checkpoint was conducted as part of ongoing holiday enforcement operations.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Eight people were arrested during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Patchogue, Suffolk Police said.

Officers from the Highway Patrol Bureau conducted a joint operation with New York State troopers at Waverly Plaza at the corner of Waverly Avenue and the north Sunrise Highway Service Road in Patchogue from 11:15 p.m. Friday until 2:10 a.m. Saturday.

The checkpoint was part of an ongoing Labor Day holiday weekend crackdown targeting alcohol and drug impaired driving. A total of 402 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

The following people were arrested and charged with DWI

  • Nicholas Petrelli, 24, of Bellmore
  • Charles Hoerner, 21, of Wading River
  • Leah Miramontes, 27, of Holbrook
  • Brendan Heffernan, 32, of Lake Grove
  • Judson Charles, 21, of Holtsville
  • Kareem Byrd, 43, of Bay Shore
  • Gustavo Bao, 28, of Bay Shore
  • Richard Johnson, 41, of New York City

Johnson's vehicle was seized due to a prior DWI conviction, police said.
