Almost Home Animal Rescue & Adoption in Patchogue has launched a GoFundMe page asking for the public's help to stay open.

The Long Island nonprofit has a goal of $10,000 and has already raised over $5,000.

"We need your help. We are not a rescue constantly asking for donations but right now it’s truly needed," the rescue wrote on the crowdsourcing page. "We recently put out a contest to see pictures of all the dogs and cats adopted from Almost Home. We want to continue helping bring dogs and cats in from unfortunate circumstances and to be able to see them in their forever homes, happy, loved and safe."

After starting as a foster-based rescue in 2007, Almost Home rented a small space to house a few dogs and cats. In November 2017, operators said, the landlord did not renew their lease and they were forced to find a new location with higher costs.

In addition, Almost Home said its vet bills can total up to $6,000 a month.

"We are a not for profit rescue and rely on donations to survive. Unfortunately, right now we are barley surviving," the GoFundMe page said.
